Vitamin D testing

Vitamin D is essential for maintaining healthy bone and muscle function. Here at Private GP Services we offer vitamin D level checks to all. A simple blood test can tell you if your dietary practices, supplementation, or sun exposure has been adequate in keeping our vitamin D levels in the normal range.

If your vitamin D is too low you may have symptoms including

  • Fatigue
  • Muscle aches
  • Bone pain
  • Nerve problems
  • Ricketts in children

The government now advises hat adults take a vitamin D supplement in the winter months. Young children, especially toddlers and babies should also be on a a daily supplement. If you have low exposure to sunlight all year round or are lack or Asian, daily supplements are also recommended.

This new recommendation was released by Public health England in July 2016 and is based on recommendations of the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN)

The best available way to increase your vitamin D levels is natural sunlight. Wearing sunscreen blocks the ability of the body to produce vitamin D. Finding the right balance between excessive sunlight exposure and vitamin D production can be tricky which is where testing your levels may again be helpful.

If your levels are found to be low, your doctor will provide advise on how best o rectify maters for you. This will include advice about diet and supplements.

The test costs £65 and involves a blood test which will be taken by your doctor in your consultation. Please contact us on 01245 234234 to arrange your appointment and one of our two locations.
