The Importance of Regular Sexual Health Screenings

There are many reasons to get regular sexual health screenings which we will take a look at now, but you also don’t need a reason either. If you are simply worried, curious or have questions, you can always book in a consultation with us to ask us questions, share your concerns and allow our caring experts to set you in the right direction.

Protecting Yourself and Others
Whilst it can be at times frustrating to have to look after our health, it is now easier than ever to screen for STI’s and thanks to advancements in medicine it is also becoming easier and easier to treat them.

STI’s are like any other infection and most are caused by bacteria growing out of control and are treated with antibiotics. The importance of detecting the infection early cannot be overstated as the sooner we find the infection the sooner we treat it and the easier it becomes to treat.

If you are visiting our Leeds clinic and testing regularly you can ensure you are staying on top of your sexual health and can be certain you aren’t passing anything on to your partners.

If you have regular sexual health screenings it also makes it much easier to identify which partner you may have contracted it from and minimize the number of partners you may have to contact to inform them of your positive test and the potential that they have contracted it too.

So regular sexual health screenings help not just you but your partners too and help to keep STI’s from circulating around the population.

Active Sex Life
Whilst it is possible to contract a sexually transmitted infection from a single partner, those of us with a more active and varied sex life are at a greater risk of contracting an STI.

The more often you are having sex and the more people you are having sex with, the greater the risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia and gonorrhea.

Whilst there is nothing wrong with enjoying sex with multiple partners, here out our Leeds clinic we like to encourage you to do it safely and to feel like you have a space in which to share your worries and concerns and be seen to promptly by a caring and confidential professional. So, if you are a person that enjoys an active sex life it is good to be aware that your risk is increased the more partners you have sex with and so the more sensible it becomes to get regular sexual health screenings.

Symptomless STI’s
So, a greater frequency of sex naturally increases the risk of contracting an STI but the truth is anyone can contract an STI from any form of sexual contact.

Some STI’s such as chlamydia and gonorrhea present as symptomless and other STI’s seem to have no symptoms in the beginning like genital herpes, but can erupt and cause problems over time.

Chlamydia is the most common STI in the UK and symptoms may only begin to appear around 3 weeks after contact with an infected partner but in many cases take months to show themselves.

Around 70% of women with chlamydia don’t notice any symptoms, but if left untreated it can spread to the womb and cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) which in turn can cause infertility.

Similarly, around 50% of men with chlamydia won’t notice any symptoms but if left untreated it can cause swelling in the epididymis (the tube which carries sperm from the testicles) which can cause pain and affect fertility.

Simply because you don’t think you have an STI doesn’t mean that you haven’t contracted one. Due to the nature of many STI’s presenting as symptomless in the early stages it always better to be safe than sorry, and the sooner we can detect it the sooner we can treat it, and the sooner we can treat the lower the risk of complications from having the infection.
